Made redundant: what can I claim?

Check how your NI record and household savings affect New Style Jobseeker’s Allowance and Universal Credit.

Your employer: The Post Office announced about 100 job cuts on 26 September 2026.

Usually paid or credited as an employee in the relevant two tax years, generally within the last two to three years. Self-employment Class 2 alone normally does not count.

Income above £50 a week reduces New Style JSA pound for pound.

Enter the amount you still hold when claiming. This counts with other savings for Universal Credit.

Needed for the couple rate if you live with a partner. Mixed-age couples may have other rules.

Use eligible rent, if known. Actual housing support depends on your home and local limits.

You can claim New Style JSA and Universal Credit together if eligible. Northern Ireland has separate benefit rules; this estimate uses Great Britain rates.

This is an estimate, not advice. Check the details with GOV.UK’s New Style JSA eligibility guide.

Common questions

Does redundancy pay affect Universal Credit?

Money you still hold from redundancy pay counts with household savings as capital. Capital above £6,000 reduces Universal Credit, and capital above £16,000 usually prevents a claim.

Can I claim JSA and Universal Credit together?

Yes, if eligible for both. New Style JSA counts as income and reduces Universal Credit pound for pound.
